Richard Chen is a well-known and respected businessman in Jamaica. He sits on several Government of Jamaica boards including the Development Bank of Jamaica and the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission.
Richard Mark Chen is the son of Vincent and Gloria Chen; who started their business in Jamaica in 1964. Richard resides in Kingston, Jamaica with his wife Lisa Lakan-Chen and their three children.
Richard Chen, the founder of several Jamaican business establishments including the SuperPlus chain of supermarkets and the PaperGold chain of cambios, currently sits on the board of several established businesses.
Richard Chen has over 20 years of experience in the general management of the retail sector and business development in the industry. He has managed the complex operations of a supermarket chain with more than 30 outlets, employing over 2,000 individuals and registering annual sales of more than US$200M and has also devoted 15 years of his life in the general management of alternative financial services including FX trading, remittances and bill payments.
Richard has served for two terms as the Vice President in one of the most influential business groups in Jamaica, the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ). He has also held board positions in several Jamaican charitable organizations and sits on the board of the Development Bank of Jamaica and the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission.
Education and Training
Richard was educated at the University of West Indies, in Mona, Jamaica, West Indies, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science with honours in 1987.
He participated in the a training workshop held by The Coca-Cola IGA Institute of the USA in October 2004. In April 2004, he completed the Corporate Governance Course that was being offered by the PSOJ/Mona School of Business in Jamaica West Indies.
He did several courses offered by Growth Faciliators: in December 2003, he did Strategic Management facilitated by Robert Kaplan, in March 2005 he did a course entitled Developing Leaders, in April 2005 a Facilitation Course, in October 2005 Cyber Strategy, in 2006 skills training course entitled Innovation under the mentorship of Clay Christensen and in February 2007 Transformational Coaching.
After graduating from the University of the West Indies, he worked as a Database Manager at AIC in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada where he managed client data for a financial planning firm. He was with this company from August 1987 to May 1989 where his responsibilities included systems procurement, implementation and training.
In May 1989 he returned to Jamaica where he managed the operations of one of Jamaica’s largest retailer as owner and operator of J & D Supermarket, this was until September of 1993. He went on to become one of the Directors and the Chief Operating Officer of SuperPlus Food Stores in 1993 until November 2010. At the same time in November of 1993 to the present, he served as Executive Director of PaperGold Limited where his responsibilities included working with senior management to guide the chain’s expansion and new product developments.
His professional experience as a Chief Operations Officer of SuperPlus Food Stores was extensive, spanning more than a decade before it’s restructuring in 2009. SuperPlus was the largest retailer in Jamaica in 2009 with 38 supermarkets all over the island under his brother Wayne Chen’s directorship and his management. At the peak of its operations, the supermarket chain had more than 100,000 regular customers and was employing over 2,200 individual.
Richard Chen, as SuperPlus’ Chief Operations Officer managed all aspects of the store’s network expansion, including acquisition and lease of land and buildings, human resources and product marketing. He also managed the implementation of POS and accounting systems and was responsible for all aspects of procurement and training.
He developed and implemented comprehensive training programmes for the store’s employees and was credited with assisting the SuperPlus marketing team in the development of SuperPlus community outreach programmes, which resulted in the customers’ loyalty to the stores. He was also responsible for the development and management of the SuperPlus on-line shopping website, making SuperPlus Jamaica’s only retail store with the technological sophistication of serving customers’ online shopping needs.
While he was making SuperPlus the modern store that it was, Richard was also concurrently working as Executive Director of PaperGold Limited, an affiliate company of SuperPlus. This company has been established to address the needs of the consumers and customers of SuperPlus in terms of financial services. His responsibilities include assisting with the chain’s expansion and new product developments which included but was not limited to; remittance, fx trading, payroll loans, bill payments and other financial products for the consumers.
The group that was overseen by Richard Chen was also responsible for pioneering the Western Union remittance service at SuperPlus. At the height of its performance, more than 20% of the transactions of Western Union in Jamaica went through the SuperPlus system.
In terms of Directorships, Richard has served as Director of the Development Bank of Jamaica and also as a Director/Commissioner of the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission of Jamaica. He has shown his concern for the youth as an Executive Committee member of the Youth Upliftment Through Employment (YUTE) and Trustee of the Jamaica Youth Business Trust. He is a Charter Member (1991) of the Rotary Club of May Pen, Board Member of the CVSS/United Way of Jamaica and has served the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) as its Vice President for two terms.Interests: Computer Technology, Sports, Intellectual Games
